On a chilly Friday night, Stratford RFC ventured to Birmingham to face Moseley Oak (Moak) in a highly anticipated Regional 2 West league encounter. The previous clash between these two teams had ended in a narrow victory for Moseley Oak, making this rematch even more intriguing. Due to recent weather conditions, the match was relocated to Birmingham University's Artificial Grass Pitch, providing ideal conditions for an exciting display of running rugby. The home side, Moak, kicked off proceedings with a lion's share of possession, relentlessly testing the resilience of the steadfast Stratford defence. However, the black and white defensive wall proved unyielding, dominating collisions and forcing errors from the attacking side. This defensive prowess allowed Stratford to gain momentum, leading to a well-executed set play that saw winger Andy Oliver cross the try line on the right-hand touchline. The conversion attempt narrowly missed, leaving the score at 0-5. Moak responded with sustained pressure in the Stratford 22, but the determined defence continued to repel their advances. Eventually, the hosts secured a penalty in front of the posts, narrowing the gap to 3-5. Stratford, however, maintained their composure and pressed hard, showcasing dominance but struggling to convert opportunities into points. As the first half approached its conclusion, center Bron Koziel's jinking run resulted in another try for Stratford, extending their lead to 10-3 at halftime. The second half saw a continuation of Stratford's powerful and incisive play. Lewis Mellor claimed the first of his two tries with a brilliant move down the left flank, showcasing a combination of forward and back play. Dan Whitby added the extras, making the score 3-17. Mellor soon found himself on the scoresheet again, courtesy of an outstanding run from substitute winger Jacob Kinnaird. Despite a missed conversion, Stratford firmly controlled the match at 3-22. Moak, however, rallied in the final 15 minutes and after sustained pressure and multiple phases, they managed to score a try out wide, impressively converted from the touchline. With only 5 minutes remaining, they powered through again with some formidable forward running, securing a losing bonus point. The final score stood at 15-22 in favour of Stratford. While pleased with picking up 5 a maximum return from the away victory, Stratford acknowledged missed opportunities and emphasized the need to capitalize on chances. Looking ahead to their next fixture against Newent at Pearcecroft on Saturday, 13th January, the team anticipates a challenging encounter. Newent, seeking redemption after recent losses, promises to be formidable competition. All support for this upcoming spectacle is warmly welcomed by the Stratford team. While the 2nd XV travel to Harbury for a league fixture.
