Stratford Upon Avon RFC

19 - 13

(HT 0-0)

Newent RFC

In a gripping encounter at Pearcecroft, Stratford upon Avon 1st XV emerged victorious against Newent 1st XV with a final score of 19-13 in the Midlands West Regional 2 rugby clash. The game not only showcased intense on-field action but also served as a poignant tribute to the late Dr. Ken Holley, a former club player, president, and revered figure in the Stratford rugby community.

The match kicked off with an electrifying start for Stratford as they took the lead within the opening 5 minutes. Hooker James Paterson, making his first start, demonstrated precision from a lineout, finding his mark at the back to set up a try for stand-in prop Angus Wightman. The try, a result of clever and well-managed rugby, put Stratford ahead at 5-0.

Newent, however, responded strongly in the first half, scoring a try and a penalty to turn the tables, leading 5-10 as the teams headed into the halftime break. The Stratford coaching staff emphasized the need to secure possession better during the interval, setting the stage for a determined second-half performance.

Stratford faced considerable pressure in the second half, but their defence held firm. Fly-half Nathan Geekie showcased his skill by jinking his way through the opposition to score under the posts, reclaiming the lead for Stratford. A clever run from No 8 Jack Young, shortly after the kickoff, set up Angus Wightman for his second try, extending Stratford's lead to 19-10.

Despite Newent clawing back with another penalty, bringing the score to 19-13, the last 10 minutes were tense, especially with Stratford's scrum under sustained pressure. The home team, however, demonstrated resilience and held on to secure the victory, marking their seventh win in the last eight games.

The match was more than just a sporting event; it served as a touching tribute to Dr. Ken Holley. A minute's applause before the game, in the presence of members of his family, highlighted the profound impact he had on the club. Dr. Holley's legacy will forever be woven into the fabric of Pearcecroft, and the Stratford rugby community will continue to honour the memory of a true gentleman and legend.

The 2nd XV went down 42-26 away at Harbury. Next week the 1st XV make the long journey to Ludlow, while the 2nds travel to Manor Park.
