32 - 17

(HT 0-0)

Stratford Upon Avon RFC

Newent v Stratford RFC 30th September

Stratford made the long trip to a venue in which they have never before played. Newent RFC based in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire were the early pace setters in Midlands Counties (West) 2 having won four from four and ultimately proved too strong for a depleted Stratford RFC XV.

After quick territory gain immediately after kick-off, and slick side-line to side-line play, Newent went up 5-0 scoring a try in the right corner. A long period dominated by kicking, lead to multiple 22 entries by Stratford, however a well-run hard line by Newent, lead to an well constructed long-distance break extending their lead to 12-0.

An incorrect restart resulted in a scrum, which Newent used as a platform for their quick outside backs. Smart play from them blitzed Stratford’s defence and a corner try ensued, which made the score 17-0. Stratford refused to go away however, and a neat interception by Tom Howard, allowed Gwilym Davis to convert a penalty, bringing the game to 17-3.

The fightback continued and smart kicking lead the Black and Whites deep into Newent’s 22. Consistent pressure led to an erratic defensive play, giving the ball to Dan Whitby, who blasted his way through the defensive line, which made the score 17-10 om the stroke of half time.

After half time, despite determined defence from Stratford, deep in their own half for over 10 minutes, Newent eventually found a way through, extending the lead to 24-10. Poor discipline after the restart gifted Newent another 3 points, the score, 27-10.

Stratford then failed to convert in the red zone, and consecutive set pieces allowed Newent to score again through a lineout which made the score 32-10. To their credit Stratford finished the strongest, developing some cohesive team play which finished with a Jack Young try, reducing the lead to 32-17 at the finish.

Stratford 1st XV travel to Silhillians on the 14th, while the 2nd’s play Claverdon at home. Stratford RFC have 3 men’s teams that train at Pearcecroft on Loxley Road on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30 and there is a very successful ladies touch rugby section. All teams are always recruiting and would be delighted to welcome new players, so if you are interested, please do get in touch.
